| Bringing the Hunter Back |
By Tammy Chipko
Imagine watching a gorgeous horse galloping a course of fences that replicate what you would find in an open hunt field.
Imagine watching the art of good riding: jumping hunt obstacles that ask different questions of horse and rider - negotiating turns, establishing a true hunter pace, trotting a wide fence like one you might find in the country.
Imagine spectators who typically only watch the grand prix ring enthusiastically showing up at the hunter ring to cheer on their favorite hunters. And, most importantly, understanding what a hunter is all about.
Well, you don’t have to imagine it any longer. The High Performance Hunter is here and, due to those who have worked hard to get it back, is gaining recognition.
|
 |
It all started with George Morris who earlier this year told me that he had “…planted the seed. It’s now up to everyone else to make it happen.” Well, as most of us know, when George Morris speaks, we listen! So, it is thanks to people like Diane Carney, a member of the High Performance Committee, who have invested valuable time to develop a program that will bring the lost art of showing the traditional hunter back to the show ring.
High Performance Riding means addressing the jump through good horsemanship. We want to build courses that address height and width with more demanding jumps. We have had tremendous support from everyone regarding this class. Riders everywhere are rising to the occasion. Lauren Hough and Beezie Madden are just a few of the jumper riders who have shown a lot of enthusiasm and are looking forward to competing in these classes in the coming year.
How it Works
There will be four classes in each region. The classes will be held at ‘AA’ shows, in grass fields or in sand arenas, and offer a minimum of $10,000.00 in prize money. Each class will be judged by four judges, two groups of two judges each. The first round is a classic hunter type of round. The second round will be a handy course rewarding those who show true handiness with a bonus of up to ten points.
At WIHS
I had the chance to compete in one of these classes at the Washington International Horse Show. The jumps were spectacular, the courses were fun and challenging, and the spectators were thrilled. It was a very memorable experience and I hope all of you, either as exhibitors or spectators, will get a chance to be part of this. These events will be well worth the walk over to the hunter ring.
Check for the 2008 schedule of the High Performance Hunter classes at www.ushja.org.
Special thanks to Kristi Siam for providing this classic hunter photo. |

TAMMY CHIPKO TALKS WITH TOP PROFESSIONALS:
DR. JENNY JOHNSON – SHOCKWAVE THERAPY SPECIALIST
Many of us have used Shockwave Therapy on our horses - possibly unaware of how remarkable it is in stimulating the body’s own natural healing processes. And not just in horses but in small and exotic animals.
After speaking with Dr. Jenny Johnson, a veterinarian who specializes in Shockwave Therapy, I found her to be extremely informative and passionate about her work. She helped me to realize how you can truly enhance many types of healing through this amazing therapy.
Tammy Chipko: What is Shockwave Therapy?
Jenny Johnson: A shockwave is a pressure wave and when focused and propagated through soft tissue will stimulate an increase in blood flow to an area of injury and will stimulate the body’s own stem cells and numerous other healing factors to migrate to that area. Essentially, it helps the body to heal itself. Shockwave therapy can be used to help treat tendon and ligament injuries, arthritis, neck and back pain, and can help stimulate wounds to heal.
TC: Who can benefit from Shockwave Therapy?
JJ: There are so many reasons to use Shockwave Therapy. If you have a horse that suffers from arthritis, degenerative joint disease, navicular syndrome, sore neck or back, strained or torn suspensory ligament or flexor tendon, ringbone, collateral ligament injury, joint inflammation or pain, or a large wound that is not healing properly. Shockwave therapy has also been found to be a very effective way to help stimulate healing in the case of burns.
TC: Why did you choose to specialize in Shockwave Therapy?
JJ: I researched the vast array of therapeutic options available to the horse before deciding to specialize. Shockwave therapy has been used in Europe to treat musculoskeletal injuries in humans and animals for many years and was brought to the US to treat horses in the late 90’s. With very specific documented effects, it is proven to increase circulation and to build new blood cells and stem cells. This is very important in healing.
TC: What sets you apart from other veterinarians using Shockwave Therapy?
JJ: This is all I do. I am a specialist, which to me is an asset. I am the one performing the therapy. It is extremely important who holds the probe! Only a veterinarian should do this. If you are even slightly off you miss the target and the therapy is wasted. I have done extensive research, attended many forums and lectures on this therapy. Recently I attended the 10th Annual Congress of the International Society for Musculoskeletal Shockwave Therapy, held in Toronto, Canada. This meeting was held over three days and there were presentations on the current research projects and findings of musculoskeletal shockwave therapy. I have relationships with veterinarians all over and work with them to determine the optimum treatment regime for each individual horse.
TC: Do you work on other animals besides horses?
JJ: I am expanding my practice to include small animals and exotic animals as well. Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat hip dysplasia and numerous other arthritic conditions as well as help stimulate fracture healing and wound healing. It’s a very exciting technology that continues to grow and benefit so many different animals.
TC: Where do you practice?
JJ: I am based in Calabasas, CA and travel to clients, horse shows, events, etc. I also work with veterinarians throughout the state.
Dr. Johnson is available to answer any questions you may have. Contact her by email or 818.809.7498. More information at www.oakhillshockwave.com. |

| A Toast to Community |
All of us at EquestriSol are truly in awe of how everyone in the horse community pulled together during the Southern California wildfires.
It was just another perfect weather Sunday as the Santa Anas blew in. Suddenly Malibu was ablaze and the fires were spreading fast. And that was just the beginning. The ensuing week was an unbelievable nightmare as fires burned all over the southland, from San Diego County to the Lake Arrowhead mountains.
Horse show facilities turned into evacuation stations. Countless organizations, farms, groups, and individuals came together – we heard so many heroic stories. We applaud the efforts and after exchanging hundreds of messages with all our equestrian friends we believe everyone miraculously made it through.
Our thoughts go out to all who experienced evacuating horse and home. We applaud your bravery and a standing ovation to all the courageous people who made themselves, their barns and their homes available to horsemen and horses alike no matter what breed or discipline. Now that’s community.
