From Behind the Lens: A Journal from World Cup Photographer Tim
Poulsen

DAY
1:
Wow
what a plane ride that was! I didn’t think it was ever going
to end. Kuala Lumpur is really amazing! It’s much hotter than
I expected and the people here drive like maniacs, but the show
facility is beautiful and the organizers are very accommodating.
On
Wednesday, which is in a few hours, some from the group are going
on an elephant tour and I am photographing Asian riders and practice
rounds. More tomorrow...
DAY
2:
Well
it’s a very amazing place but so many issues to deal with!
The power is different here, the room is tiny and I can’t
get over the heat. Today it took me two hours to finally get a shuttle
to the arena, so I only made it for the last couple horses. The
daily drive to the arena is a life risking adventure, cars, pedestrians,
mopeds go anywhere whenever they want, all at the same time! And
then it downpours but no one slows down!
DAY
3:
The
elephants were so much fun for everyone; they actually got to go
swimming with them!
Today
we left the hotel at 9:30 am and the jumping will end tonight around
10pm. The Asian riders are very enthusiastic, despite crashes, refusals
and disqualifications. Sadly
Rich Fellers’ horse got sick and he withdrew.
There’s
lots of the same press this year as last years 2005 World Cup in
Vegas, its fun to see everyone again.
DAY
4:
The
competition last night was very tough, the Americans didn’t
really measure up to the Europeans.
Today
was my first time sitting in the front seat of a taxi, so going
twice the speed limit, never signaling and not caring about what
lane you’re in or where the guard rail or oncoming traffic
is a serious eye opener.
The
most amazing landmark is the archery range right next to the road.
Yes that’s right, the traffic is the backdrop of the hundreds
of archers out for there morning practice! There’s even a
stop light there for us to watch them shooting at us. Crazy!
DAY
5:
It
may sound like I complain a lot, the days are long, but the competitors
are the world’s best and the show organizers treat us like
kings. I’ve accumulated some nice photos, Marcus Ehning is
reigning (and reining) supreme.
DAY
6:
Kent
Farrington from the USA won the Kuala Lumpur Cup! I've learned that
the Americans rarely jump indoors in small arenas – I understand
that certain riders are starting to plan their schedules for more
Indoor opportunities and horse show managers on both coasts are
hosting more indoor Grand Prix.
FINAL
DAY:
Congratulations
to Marcus Ehning - I don’t think he had made an error in four
rounds of jumping. The stadium filled up and the crowd was loud
and crazy!
The
show has been great for me, I've got friends from all over the world,
a couple magazines want cover pictures and one of the top sponsors,
Mitavite, had me take team pictures.
I now
have all pictures organized and uploaded. As the say, they are worth
thousands of words, so take a look at: http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.dll?eventthumbs?event=042N00DQ
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Susan Artes and Presto B for the ONLY double
clear round in the first European Trial, the $10,000 Ralph’s
Power & Speed Grand Prix Qualifier at the Del Mar National Horse
Show. Click here for the most recent WCAR European Trial results…
Congratulations
to Roscoe, John French (rider)
and Archie Cox (owner) on earning Championship
honors in the Green Conformation Hunters at the Del Mar National
Horse Show.
Congratulations
to Jenni Martin and V de Pomme
on placing 4th in the $100,000 HBO Grand Prix of
Del Mar. This was V de Pomme’s first Grand Prix start, looks
like she’ll have a bright future!
Congratulations to Gretchen Manning from Moorpark,
CA on the purchase of Rio's Rikita (Scott Wilson,
agent).
